A group of Gullah-Geechee people, along with some Sierra Leoneans in the US, left Atlanta, GA on December 27, 2019, and landed on a warm and muggy day at Lungi International airport on December 28, 2019. For most of them, it was their first time in Africa. But not only were they going to Africa on a safari but on a heritage tour in a deep search of an understanding of their roots. This photo collection speaks to that first day.
They walked into a warm welcome at the airport as they were greeted by a band of Sierra Leoneans who had promised to meet the group upon arrival in the country.
